It makes sense to inquire about a quote while a technician is currently on site, has studied your system, can take photos and view surrounding home cooling and water heater equipment. Let us help keep you informed and plan ahead.  Most importantly we will be ready for you, offering peace of mind when those emergency bursts, outages, electrical surges, or leaks happen damaging your heating, cooling, or water heating equipment.

Forced Hot Air

Forced Hot Air (FHA) and cooling systems are in most new homes. These systems use a central furnace that can include air conditioning and/or a heat pump. When you hear the word furnace, think of air blowing - Forced Hot Air (FHA). The air can be warm for heating or cool for air conditioning. Furnaces can be fueled by gas, oil or electric.

Consuming the same amount of electricity but with at least three times more heat produced, a Heat Pump System is an alternative source to electric heat for your home. They heat and cool with high efficiency, pairing with an Air Handler or a FHA furnace fueled by gas or oil. All mini split systems have a Heat Pump providing cool air for summer comfort and warm air for very chilly days.

AFUE and Equipment Features

Heating systems AFUE and Equipment features reported by the Department of Energy.

  • LOW - continuous pilot light, heavy heat exchanger, 56% to 70% AFUE, natural draft generating a flow of combustion gases
  • MED - exhaust fan controls flow of combustion air & gases more accurately, electronic ignition, smaller and lighter weight to reduce cycling losses, small diameter flue pipe, 80% to 83% AFUE.
  • HIGH - condensing flue gases in 2nd heat exchanger, sealed combustion, 90% to 98.5% AFUE.

Some furnaces can be retrofitted to increase efficiency and safety. Programmable thermostats, upgrading ductwork or adding zone controls are some means to consider. Costs should be weighed against replacement, especially when considering current fuel source costs, age and consideration of a/c added.

The goal is to convert nearly all the fuel to useful heat for your home, reduce fuel bills, and pollution output. The Department of Energy reports that heating systems upgraded from 56% to 90% efficiency in an average cold-climate house will save 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emission each year when fueled with gas or 2.5 tons when fueled with oil.

Consider a home audit to improve your homes energy efficiency. Next call Paradigm to size your furnace. The upgrades may be as simply as a thermostat replacement or reinstalling new duct work, replacing a standard pilot light with electronic ignition and if a more efficient system is needed our specialist will be able to help you find the Energy Star® system best for your home. Whatever is needed to create a more comfortable, cleaner, safer, healthier home environment and efficiency for all your heating, a/c and plumbing systems we are here to guide and support you with a team of professionals.

Furnace efficiency (AFUE), cost of fuel and the amount of energy necessary to maintain a steady indoor temperature of 65 degrees are assessment factors in replacing your current system. Particularly, if your fuel source is oil or electric, as it may be worth considering switching to gas which often is competitively priced and the best condensing-type furnaces are gas. They can capture up to 97% AFUE - that fuels energy which turns into heat.
